Boris Johnson claimed he rejected a chance to stop Prince Harry and Meghan Markle making their exit from the Royal Family.
The revelation has been made in his forthcoming memoir, Unleashed, in which the former Prime Minister covers his life’s crucial events.
The book, to be released on October 10, highlights a moment when he believed that Buckingham Palace and Downing Street officials thought the then-PM could talk Prince Harry out of his decision in early 2020.
Mr Johnson said he was asked to have a "manly pep talk" with the Duke of Sussex to argue it would be wrong to leave the UK for a new life in America with his wife Meghan Markle.
He writes: "I suppose it’s a bit sad that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are leaving for California. There was a ridiculous business the other day when they made me try to persuade Harry to stay. Kind of manly pep talk. Totally hopeless.

"But it doesn’t matter, really? Who cares if they go to California?"
Mr Johnson reportedly had met the Duke of Sussex and the meeting took place for 20 minutes that month without any aides at a UK-Africa investment summit.
It came hours after Prince Harry gave a speech saying he felt "great sadness" about leaving the UK but felt he had "no other option."
"Boris succeeded in delivering Brexit but even he couldn’t stop Megxit," a "friend" quoted by the Daily Mail, which began serialising Johnson’s memoir last Saturday, said.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's exit from the Royal Family, often referred to as "Megxit," took place in early 2020.
They announced their decision to step back from royal duties in January of that year, expressing a desire for financial independence and the ability to live more privately, especially after facing intense media scrutiny.
The couple eventually relocated to the US, signed media deals with platforms like Netflix, and took on charity work through their organisation, Archewell.
Mr Johnson's memoir is already topping the Amazon UK Books Best Sellers list, outselling recently published novels by Sally Rooney and Richard Osman. It can be found at https://amzn.to/3ZUJMxJ
